'A Drop of the Hard Stuff' is an excellent return to classic Scudder - both in the quality of writing, and indeed the period (the book is told as flashback, topped and tailed by 'current' Scudder).

And as the book is set in the past, it allows for the reintroduction of some favourite (deceased) characters, and introduction of some contemporary new ones - together with new insights on /5().

A Drop of the Hard Stuff is about crime and punishment, old scores and justice denied, all wrapped up with Scudder's trip through his first year of sobriety and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Altogether, this is a terrific read, second only to his best "Everyone Dies", but with a very different, almost surreal background, /5(). A Drop of the Hard Stuff is worth reading if only as a case study for how to write dialogue realistically, or how to research a setting -- the entire book revolves around Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and writings, which Block wrote so well, I /5.
